Community Insights and Prize Winners Announced!

BMX Project

We are thrilled to share the results of our recent survey about Malcolm More BMX Reserve as part of our Youth Voice Project. The survey, which aimed to gather community support and insights for rejuvenating the reserve, saw 154 enthusiastic participants. Your strong backing for the project and invaluable input have significantly guided the design process, making you an integral part of this rejuvenation journey.

The survey results have been instrumental in informing the Concept Designer appointed by the students and their presentation to the Shoalhaven City Councillor’s Briefing on Thursday, 25 July 2024.  At the briefing, the students will present the survey data and the research they have conducted to support their campaign for the Council to rejuvenate the reserve. They will also provide the Councillors with the concept plan designed by James Hall.

It’s been exciting to see this collaborative effort come to life and reflect the community’s needs and aspirations.

Key Findings from the Survey

  • Community Engagement: Nearly all respondents, except one from Queensland, reside in the Shoalhaven area, primarily from villages along the shores of St Georges Basin.
  • Cycling Enthusiasts: The majority of respondents are avid bike riders.
  • Current Park Usage: 55% of respondents currently use the park.
  • Safety Concerns: 59.31% of participants feel the reserve is dangerous or very dangerous.
  • Unified Desire for Improvement: An overwhelming 100% of respondents want the BMX track fixed.
  • Top Community Requests: The top four amenities the community wants are an improved track, a water station, sheltered seating, and a toilet block.
  • Potential Increased Usage: Currently, 15.66% use the track daily, projected to rise to 24.31% with added amenities. Similarly, 33% use the track weekly, which could increase to 47.22% post-improvements.

The data shows that if the park is revitalised, it will become a well-used destination for general BMX riding, hanging out, picnics, and gatherings. It could potentially attract both the local community and tourists, boosting visits to the area and benefiting local businesses. The park will also become a valuable asset for St. Georges Basin Public School. It may alleviate pressure on other parks during peak holiday periods. Furthermore, it will provide a local training ground for BMX riders, including the VHS BMX team.
