The Firefly Bay & Basin Youth Crew gathered at the Vincentia Community Hub on 21 August for their monthly meeting, with a fantastic turnout and several new members joining the Crew for the first time.
The afternoon gave everyone a chance to get to know each other, reflect on what makes Youth Crew special, and start thinking about where the group would like to head next.
When members talked about their favourite parts of being involved, a few themes quickly emerged: friendships, feeling welcome, having a voice, and, unsurprisingly, the pizza. Safe to say the pizza was once again a hit.
The group spent time looking back on past achievements and discussing ideas for future projects. There was plenty of enthusiasm for community initiatives such as Burton St. Beats, creating spaces and activities for young people, and finding new ways to get involved in local events and community life.
One exciting opportunity on the horizon is Spring into Sanctuary Point. At the next Youth Crew meeting, members will begin planning a Youth Crew stall for the event and exploring how they can showcase projects, opportunities and ways for other young people to get involved.
The meeting also included discussion about upcoming training opportunities. With support from Firefly Bay & Basin, Youth Crew will soon be offering a free Youth Mental Health First Aid course for young people across the Bay and Basin. The training will help participants recognise the signs that someone may be experiencing a mental health challenge and build practical skills to support friends and peers in a safe and appropriate way.
As the Crew continues to grow, we’re excited to see new friendships forming, fresh ideas emerging and more young people stepping up to make a positive difference in their community.
Youth Crew is open to young people who want to meet new people, build leadership skills, contribute to community projects and have a say in issues that matter to them.
