Youth Voice students secure a grant to run skateboarding events in Sanctuary Point and Sussex Inlet, advocating for safer, inclusive skate parks.

Get ready, Shoalhaven! Our Youth Voice students are taking the skate parks by storm this October!

Firefly Bay and Basin is thrilled to announce that our Youth Voice students have secured a grant from the Bendigo Bank Community Grants Program to deliver two incredible youth-led skateboarding events in the Shoalhaven this October.

This funding means that Project Skate, an idea dreamed up and developed by students at Vincentia High School through the Youth Voice project, will come to life in Sanctuary Point and Sussex Inlet.

What is Project Skate?

Project Skate is a youth-led initiative focused on skateboarding and skate culture. Its main aim is to draw attention to the current state of the Sussex Inlet Skate Park and to garner community support for its improvement. Through the project, students are creating events that celebrate skateboarding while also highlighting the need for safe, fun, and inclusive spaces for young people. August, one of the Youth Voice students, explains, “I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been planning—it’s going to be epic!” Another student, Oscar, adds, “I’m proud to be part of the project team bringing this free event to Sanctuary Point and my hometown of Sussex Inlet.”

What’s happening in October?

  • Two action-packed days: one at Sanctuary Point Skate Park and one at Sussex Inlet Skate Park
  • Free skateboarding clinics and a Skate Jam led by Totem Skateboarding
  • Music, food, and community activities for all ages
  • Events co-designed and run entirely by young people, from planning the activities and deciding the food to taking the mic as MCs on the day
  • Special focus at Sussex Inlet: these activities will highlight the current condition of the skate park and give the community a chance to show support for its improvement

Why it matters

Project Skate is about more than tricks and competitions. By putting young people in the driver’s seat, it’s building leadership, confidence, and teamwork, while also raising awareness in the community about the need for skate park improvements. These events provide young people with a safe and inclusive space to shine—and a platform to advocate for change.

Firefly Bay and Basin would like to thank Bendigo Bank for its support of youth-led initiatives that make a real difference in our community. We also acknowledge our partners, Sanctuary Point Community Pride and Sussex Inlet Neighbourhood Centre, who will help bring the events to life.

Stay tuned—over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes updates from our Youth Voice students as they design every element of these events. The countdown to October is on.
