This October, Sanctuary Point and Sussex Inlet skate parks will come alive with the sound of wheels on concrete and the energy of young people pushing their skills to new heights. The Youth Voice Project “Project Skate” is hosting two special skateboarding events on Saturday, 11 October and Sunday, 12 October, a celebration of youth, skateboarding, and community spirit.
These sessions aren’t just about learning new tricks. They’re about creating a safe, supportive place where young people can connect, build confidence, and share their love of skateboarding. Whether you’re new to skating or already dropping into the bowl, the workshops are open to everyone.

Why Project Skate Matters
For 2025 Youth Voice students and skaters like Oscar and August, the skate park is more than just a place to ride; it’s a second home. Skate parks sometimes get a bad reputation, but they are essential spaces where young people can gather, make friends, create memories, and learn new skills. They also need to be safe, accessible, and well-maintained so that everyone can enjoy them and continue to grow.
“The park is where I’ve met mates, learnt patience, and found out what I can push myself to do.” – Oscar
Oscar first picked up a skateboard when he was about eight, drawn to the freedom and challenge it offered. Over the years, the park has become the backdrop for many milestones in his skating journey.
“It gives you somewhere to go, something to focus on,” he says. “It’s where I’ve met mates, learnt patience, and found out what I can push myself to do.”
August started skating around the age of ten, and what began as curiosity quickly turned into passion. For him, skating is a way to express creativity and find belonging.
“You’re always learning, about yourself, about balance, about not giving up. It’s more than tricks; it’s life lessons.”
A Place to Grow Together
Both skaters agree that having structured events like Project Skate makes a real difference. It’s not only about skill-building but also about the community that forms around the sessions.
As Oscar puts it, “When people come together at the park, it’s good vibes. You can see everyone supporting each other, no matter their level.”
August echoes this sentiment, noting that skating is a way to connect with others who share the same drive.
“It doesn’t matter who you are, if you’re on a board, you belong.” – August
