Firefly Youth Crew Training Days: Pizza, Pitches and Big Ideas

Firefly’s new Youth Crew kicked off with two inspiring days of team-building, big ideas, and bold pitches—powered by pizza and purpose!
Youth Crew

On 18 May and 1 June, the Bay and Basin Youth Crew kicked off two jam-packed training days, focusing on connection, creativity, and confidence–building. The Youth Crew is a new advisory group of young people passionate about making change in their community and these training days were their first step.

Held at the beautiful Greenhouse Co-Working Space in Huskisson, the setting exuded just the right vibe: relaxed, grown-up, and full of positive energy. It felt like the perfect launchpad for what turned out to be two enjoyable and inspiring days.

The crew participated in team-building activities organised by Sonder Youth, including a hilarious challenge where they had to select a random item from the room (such as an indoor plant, string, or a bottle of water) and convince everyone it was the ultimate item to bring to a deserted island. The pitches were full of creativity, laughter and some seriously questionable survival tactics.

Firefly also ran sessions where the group explored how they want to work together, covering youth-led governance, group structure, and making decisions as a team. It was exciting to see everyone step up and begin co-creating something that truly belongs to them.

The group also delved deeply into local issues affecting young people and brainstormed ways to turn their ideas into tangible action. With support from Sonder and Firefly, they learned how to use their confidence, lived experience and unique perspectives to drive positive change in their communities.

Of course, no Youth Crew Day is complete without good food – Subway kept us going on Day 1, and pizza from Swell made a glorious appearance on Day 2.

What’s Next for the Youth Crew?

By the end of the training, new friendships had formed, ideas were flowing, and the group had built a strong sense of connection and purpose. Whether it was teaming up in games, sharing stories, or pitching rogue island survival plans, the vibe across both days was one of fun, respect and possibility.

We’re super proud of the Firefly Youth Crew and can’t wait to see what they dream up next.

Watch this space — these young legends are just getting started.
