Bay and Basin: What Makes a Strong Community?

What makes the Bay and Basin Strong?

In July, we asked people from across the Bay and Basin several questions to understand: What makes a strong community?

Sixty-four people shared their thoughts, from young people and parents to long-time residents, volunteers, and local organisations. We reached out through community events, social media, newsletters and pop-ups at community spaces and events.

This survey and its results are part of the Strengthening Communities Alliance’s work to better understand what matters most to local people. The Alliance brings together Firefly Bay and Basin, Uniting, Mission Australia, and United Way, who all share the same goal: helping communities thrive by working alongside them.

Here are some of the key takeaways from what you shared with us:

What Makes a Community Strong?

When asked more broadly about community strength, five themes stood out:

  • People & connections. Supportive neighbours, kindness, volunteering, and making sure young people have a voice.
  • Belonging & pride. A community where everyone feels included and proud to be part of it.
  • Shared experiences. Opportunities to gather, celebrate, and connect through events and spaces.
  • Services & infrastructure. Reliable health, transport, and community facilities that support wellbeing.
  • Leadership & voice. People want to be heard and able to shape decisions that affect them.

Strengths of the Bay and Basin

When reflecting on our own community, people highlighted:

  • Friendly neighbours who rally together in times of crisis
  • Active volunteers and community groups
  • A welcoming, inclusive culture
  • Beaches, bushland, and green spaces that bring people together
  • Markets, festivals, and local activities that spark connection

Where We Can Grow Stronger

Community members also spoke about what could make Bay and Basin even stronger:

  • More programs, spaces, and decision-making opportunities for young people
  • Better access to health care, transport, and recreational facilities
  • Stronger unity between villages
  • More social events and spaces to connect
  • Broader involvement in volunteering and fewer barriers to participation
  • Greater visibility and inclusion for diverse groups

Looking Ahead

Most people told us they feel safe in the Bay and Basin and can rely on their neighbours. At the same time, there’s a clear call for more opportunities to participate, better services, and stronger ways for people to have a voice in local issues.
