Youth Voice Projects Update

Vincentia High's students are transforming ideas into action with projects like creative expression walls, BMX track revamps, a daily breakfast club, and ASD support initiatives.

Last year, a group of passionate students from Vincentia High School wowed the Bay and Basin community with their project pitches as part of Firefly”s Youth Voice Project “Pitch Party.” This event united high schoolers, families, friends, and the broader community to hear young visionaries share their plans to support local youth.

In 2024, we began Phase 2 of the Youth Voice Project, where the young people are turning their pitches into reality.

Below is a summary of how these projects are progressing and what’s on the horizon.

Unleashing Creativity: Self-Expression Walls Project

The Self-Expression Walls Project aims to identify and create new spaces for creative expression within our community. Here’s the latest:

  • Chalkboards at Youth Pods: Partnering with BCR, the team is installing accessible chalkboards at the new Youth Pods. Big thanks to BCR!
  • Public Mural: The project team has been scouting for a wall to create a public mural or artwork. The students are negotiating with a local organisation and have engaged Beyond Empathy to help them.
  • Design Workshop: Join us on 17 July for a workshop with Beyond Empathy to explore designs for public art.

Revamping for Adventure: Malcolm Moore BMX Track

Focused on revitalizing the BMX track, this project engages local youth, the community, and the Council. Here’s what’s happening:

  • Petition and Survey: Support the cause by signing the petition here and completing the survey here.
  • Community Event: Don’t miss our BMX Blast Event on 7 September.
  • Concept Plan: Collaborating with a bike track designer to develop a new concept plan for the track.
  • Council Briefing: Presenting survey findings, petition results, and the concept plan to Shoalhaven City Councillors at the end of July.

Fueling Success: Vincentia High School Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club aims to operate five days a week and provide a variety of food options. Recent achievements include:

  • Expanded Operation: Now running five days a week, with efforts underway to ensure sustainability, including new equipment purchases.
  • Student Survey: Gathering feedback to meet dietary needs.
  • Lunch Support: Exploring ways to support students who don’t bring lunch.

Supporting Disability: Beyond the Spectrum

This initiative offers activities and support for young people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. Key activities include:

  • Fun Events: Lillie is planning free events for young carers and siblings of children with ASD. Dates and details will be announced soon.
  • Information Sessions: Offering free sessions for parents and caregivers. Stay tuned for more information.
  • Community Survey: Lillie-Rose is surveying the young carer community to tailor events based on their interests. Participate here.

We are immensely proud of the Youth Voice teams’ dedication to these impactful projects. This year, students have made significant decisions, learned to co-design with adults, voiced their opinions, planned projects, and represented their school at the Secondary Youth Leadership Conference in Sydney. Congratulations to all the students!

These projects are a collaborative effort involving Vincentia High School, dedicated teachers, community organizations, Shoalhaven City Council, the NSW Premiers Department, and many supportive individuals. We are grateful for all the support we have received.
