Youth Voice Creative Spaces Project: Bringing Ideas to Life

Students bring a vibrant mural to life with Beyond Empathy and Firefly!

Mural Design: A Collaborative Effort

It’s been a while since our last update on the Creative Spaces Youth Voice project, and we’re excited to share the progress! Since the success of the July holiday workshop, the project has been steadily gaining momentum. The Beyond Empathy team took the creative ideas and insights gathered during the workshop and developed a vibrant mural design concept. Throughout Term 3, the design was refined to accurately reflect the young people’s values of connection with nature, each other, and Aboriginal culture.

Painting Session: Bringing the Vision to Life

Once the final mural design was agreed upon, the Firefly and Beyond Empathy teams quickly got to work, purchasing materials and organising a painting session with the students. This exciting session took place on Tuesday, 1 October, at Firefly’s office in St Georges Basin.

The painting session was a day filled with energy, creativity, and collaboration! Four students teamed up with the Beyond Empathy crew for a fun-filled day of painting, accompanied by music, food, and plenty of great conversations. Together, they brought the mural to life, adding their personal touches to the design they had worked so hard to create.

By the end of the session, most of the mural was complete, with only a few finishing touches left to be done. The students were proud of what they had accomplished, and the excitement in the room was palpable as the mural neared its completion.

Skate and Create: Inspiring Youth Through Art and Activity

In addition to the mural painting session, we also hosted the Skate and Create event on Thursday, 3rd  October, which was well attended by local youth. Inspired by previous skating events and feedback from last year’s Youth Voice Survey—where young people expressed a desire for more free creative arts opportunities in the Bay and Basin—the event provided workshops in skateboarding and creative arts.

Participants had the chance to explore their creativity through hands-on art activities while learning from and talking with Beyond Empathy’s artists who facilitated the session. The event was a huge success, reinforcing the need for more of these opportunities in the community.

What’s Next?

Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to unveiling this incredible piece of art at the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum! We can’t wait to share the finished mural with the community and celebrate the creativity and hard work of these talented students.
