Two young leaders from Vincentia High School recently took their passion for global issues to the big stage, representing their school at the UN Youth NSW State Conference in Collaroy. This prestigious event brings together students from across New South Wales to engage in global discussions, develop leadership skills, and participate in a mock United Nations Council.
Made possible through Firefly Bay and Basin sponsorship, Jasmine and Phoebe’s journey was fully supported, including transport to and from the conference. The experience was nothing short of transformative.
Stepping Into Global Roles
At the conference, Phoebe was assigned to represent Venezuela, while Jasmine took on the role of Panama. Throughout the weekend, they participated in a range of fun and informative activities, meeting like-minded students from all over NSW who shared their passion for world issues and diplomacy.
On the final day, all student delegates gathered at UTS for a simulated UN Council session, where they put their skills to the test in a dynamic debate, representing their assigned countries on pressing global topics. Students engaged in negotiations, formed alliances, and worked together to pass resolutions—just like real-world diplomats.
Friendships Made, Horizons Expanded
Both Jasmine and Phoebe had an amazing time, gaining valuable insights into international relations and the importance of youth voices in decision-making. They believe this type of activity would be a fantastic addition to the South Coast, giving more young people the chance to develop confidence, critical thinking, and a global perspective.
“It was such an incredible experience,” said Jasmine. “I learned so much about global issues and how different countries approach them. It really opened my eyes.”
Phoebe agreed, saying, “Meeting so many passionate young people was inspiring. We should definitely bring something like this to our community!”
At Firefly, we are always looking for ways to empower local youth and create opportunities for them to explore beyond their everyday experiences. Seeing the impact of this event, we hope to support more students in accessing similar experiences in the future.
“Firefly is incredibly proud to help facilitate opportunities like this for young people in our community,” said Community Connector Christine McInerney-Percy. “Jasmine and Phoebe embraced this experience wholeheartedly, and we can’t wait to see how they use what they’ve learned to inspire others.”
Looking to the Future
Inspired by their time at the UN Youth NSW State Conference, Jasmine and Phoebe hope to see similar opportunities brought to Bay & Basin youth. Events like this allow young people to develop leadership skills, expand their worldviews, and build lifelong friendships.
