Students Create a Stunning Mural Local Museum

Self-Expression Workshop

During the school holidays, a remarkable collaboration took place as a talented group of students from the Bay and Basin joined forces with Firefly’s Youth Voice Self Expression Project team, Beyond Empathy, local artists, and the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum to conceptualise a stunning mural. This vibrant and meaningful artwork is set to be displayed at the museum, showcasing the creativity and passion of our young community members.

A Unique Collaborative Effort

The mural project was part of Firefly’s Youth Voice Self-Expression Project, which aims to provide young people with a platform to express their ideas and contribute to their community through art. Working alongside Beyond Empathy and local artists, the students engaged in a collaborative process that involved viewing the current art installations, creative games, mocking up designs, and sharing what matters to them as young people.

A Memorable Experience

The project not only gave the students a chance to develop their artistic skills but also to work closely with mentors and community partners, fostering a sense of accomplishment and connection. When students were asked how they felt about the day, most stated they felt connected, inspired, and energised.

The Creative Process

The students, guided by experienced artists and supported by their peers, explored various design ideas, experimented with colours and techniques to create individual artworks. The artworks the young people developed will be used by Beyond Empathy in the creation of a concept which will be shared with the young people for feedback during term 3.
